Following Botafogo's elimination from Brazil Cup, the club's Director of Football Carlos Alberto Montenegro yesterday kicked off a controversy by saying that the mistakes committed by assistant referee Ana Paula Oliveira in the match had to do with the fact that she was a woman. Montenegro pointed out that there are no women in the FIFA World Cup or in final games of the European League. According to him, Oliveira was "totally unprepared" and lacked the skills to participate in an important match. Oliveira is believed to have incorrectly declared offside twice during the match, which led the referee to annul two goals scored by Botafogo. As it was a semifinal, the squad missed the chance to tie 3-3 team Figueirense, and try to move on to the final succeeding in the shootouts. The mistakes, Montenegro stressed, prevented the team from earning 2.5 million reais (US$1.3 million) with the participation in a final of a nationwide championship. The assistant referee did not admit to having wrongly applied the so-called Law 11, which states that a player cannot gain an advantage by waiting for the ball near the opposing goal with only the goalkeeper between him/her and the goal. However, the National Referees Committee decided to punish Oliveira by leaving her out of three rounds of the Brazilian League.
