Citizens in Changsha, central China's Hunan Province, now have a chance to taste an "insect feast" at a new restaurant. The insect restaurant opened on Tuesday and is the first of its kind in the city, the local newspaper Sanxiang Metropolitan News reported. Restaurant management guarantees every insect is fresh and lively. Among the recommended dishes are fried yellow mealworms, ants, locusts, scorpions, bees and cicadas. Each costs 40 yuan, or about 5 U.S. dollars. Wen Lizhang, an insect expert of Hunan University, said insects have high nutrition value for their protein. For example, 100 grams of grasshoppers and locusts can contain 21 and 20.6 grams of protein respectively. By contrast, 100 grams of beef contains 18.8 grams of protein. Scorpions and black ants are especially useful for reinforcing the kidney, the expert added. Fried grasshoppers, locusts and wasps have become favourite dishes among tourists who visit the resort cities in the province. |
